Tip Calculator

Free tip calculator: enter your bill, pick a tip percentage, and split it between friends. See the tip amount, total bill, and each person's share instantly.

About this tool

Splitting a restaurant bill should be the easy part of a nice evening, but mental math after dessert is nobody's idea of fun. Add different tip expectations and a group of friends, and it gets messy fast.

Our tip calculator ends the debate. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, say how many people are splitting, and everyone instantly sees what they owe - tip, total, and per-person share.

How to use

Type the bill amount, then choose a tip from the preset buttons: 10, 15, 18, 20, or 25 percent. If you want something else, type it into the custom tip box - it overrides the preset.

Enter the number of people splitting the bill (leave it at 1 if it is just you), then press Calculate Tip. The tool shows the tip amount, the grand total, and each person's share.

The math behind it

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip. Each person's share is the total divided by the number of people.

For example, a $120 bill with a 20% tip split 3 ways: tip = $24, total = $144, each pays $48.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% is the standard range for sit-down restaurants — 15% for okay service, 18–20% for good service, 25% or more for exceptional service.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax bill?
Pre-tax is the norm — etiquette guides recommend tipping on the subtotal before tax, since the tax goes to the government, not the restaurant. This calculator lets you choose either.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly in my head?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10% of the bill, then double it. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so a 20% tip is $12.80.
What is the difference between a tip and a service charge?
A tip is voluntary and chosen by you. A service charge is mandatory — added by the restaurant, often 18–20% for large parties — and no extra tip is required on top of it.
How do I split the bill fairly between people?
Divide the total (bill + tip) by the number of people. That assumes everyone ordered roughly the same; for very different orders, split by individual amounts instead.
